The septic tank supplies worth your money in Texas are the ones your system is built to consume: wastewater-rated chlorine tablets, air pump parts, a certified effluent filter, a working high-water alarm, risers, and, on a well, softening and backup power. This page is the front door to our buying guides and the standard behind them. We would rather show our work than claim a bench test we never ran.
We build every pick from manufacturer specifications, published testing, documented installer consensus, and the Texas Administrative Code rules for on-site systems (30 TAC Chapter 285), and we say plainly when we have not used one.

Nobody publishing a septic air pump roundup has completed a five-year failure study, and sites implying otherwise are usually rewriting retailer copy. We read the spec sheet, check what a part is certified to, compare it against Texas code, and tell you where the evidence stops.

Own an aerobic system and you own mechanical equipment with a parts list, which is why Texas supply spending looks nothing like the national norm. Aerobic units with surface irrigation took 57.7% of categorized Texas installs in 2024, up from 52.0% in 2015 (our parse of TCEQ annual reports on on-site sewage facilities, or OSSFs, July 2026).
Chlorine tablets. Use only calcium hypochlorite tablets certified by EPA for wastewater disinfection. TCEQ’s maintenance guidance, last modified March 2026, is blunt about the alternative: never put swimming pool tablets in your disinfection system. Pool tablets are trichloroisocyanuric acid: slower to dissolve than calcium hypochlorite, not EPA-approved for wastewater effluent, unable to disinfect it thoroughly, and capable of releasing an explosive gas because they sit partly out of the water. That cheaper bucket in the pool aisle is the most expensive mistake on this page (background: aerobic systems).
Air pumps, diffusers, and spray heads. The compressor runs continuously, which makes it a wear part, not a fixture. Texas treats it that way: a licensed maintenance provider must test the system and report to your permitting authority at least every four months, or every six with electronic monitoring (TCEQ, citing 30 TAC 285.91(4) and 285.90(3)).
Effluent filters. Any effluent filter in a Texas septic tank must be listed and approved under NSF International Standard 46 (2000), the certification standard for on-site wastewater components, or under a standard the executive director approves (30 TAC 285.34(a)). Buy to the listing, not the sticker price.
High-water alarms. A pump tank must carry an audible and visible high-water alarm. If it is electric, the alarm circuit must be separate from the pump circuit, batteries may serve as backup only, and the electrical components must be UL listed and labeled (30 TAC 285.34(b)(1)). A silent alarm is how a pump failure becomes a yard failure.
Risers and secure lids. Every OSSF permitted on or after September 1, 2023 must have risers over the inspection and cleanout ports reaching at least two inches above grade, with a secondary plug, cap, or restraint below the riser cap (30 TAC 285.38(c)). Older systems need not retrofit, but the dig-out labor you skip at every pump-out usually makes the case (septic risers).
Two local realities drive well supply spending here: limestone geology and an unreliable grid.
Hardness first. San Antonio Water System reports typical hardness of 15 to 20 grains per gallon from the Edwards and Trinity Aquifers, the same limestone formations Hill Country wells tap. That hardness shortens water heater life and coats fixtures, which is why the softener guide leads here. One wrinkle most national roundups miss: a softener discharging to an OSSF must regenerate using a demand-initiated regeneration control device and carry a visible installer label saying so (30 TAC 285.37(b)(1)(A)).
Then power. More than one million private water wells serve roughly 2,230,000 Texans (Texas Water Resources Institute, August 2024), and a well without electricity is a house without water. During Winter Storm Uri, 69% of Texans surveyed lost power for an average of 42 hours and 49% lost running water for more than two days on average (UH Hobby School of Public Affairs, March 2021). Run an aerobic system too, and the same outage stops your compressor.
Most of the categories above still have no buying guide behind them, and we will not pretend otherwise or promise dates. Planned, roughly in order: effluent filters, septic and aerobic high-water alarms, aerobic chlorine tablets, septic tank risers, a pump-out prep kit, and well filtration. Each lands when the research supports a real recommendation, not before. Until then, the rules above should stop you buying something Texas code will not accept.
Parts you can buy; much of the installation you legally cannot. Adding a riser to any component of a new system is construction reserved for a licensed installer; on components installed on or after September 1, 2012 it is an emergency repair a licensed installer, licensed maintenance provider, or registered maintenance technician may perform (30 TAC 285.38(e) and (f)). TCEQ recommends pumping a conventional system every three to five years.
