Texas counties push new construction toward ATUs because they work where conventional drainfields cannot: small lots, clay or other poor soils, high water tables, and land near sensitive water bodies (EPA). The trade-off is mechanical: compressors, pumps, and disinfection all need tending, which is why Texas attached a legal maintenance schedule to these systems.
