Permits

Who issues them here.

Permit fees, forms & process

Any new system or major repair in Giles County needs a permit before construction starts. This county’s full guide is still in production — the authority contact is the official source in the meantime.

Local rules

What’s different in Giles County.

Four things decide what you can build and what it costs: zoning, environmental protections, power for aerobic systems, and the ground itself. We publish each one only where we have checked it — and say so plainly where the answer is “same as the rest of Tennessee”.

Zoning & land use

No county office in Giles County issues septic permits — TDEC's Division of Water Resources does. Its septic-assistance map assigns Giles County to the Columbia Environmental Field Office, and that is where the construction-permit application and fee go. Giles County is not one of the nine counties TDEC contracts to run their own septic programme, so Rule 0400-48-01 is the standard the site is judged against.

Environmental protections

Nothing in Giles County changes this. Tennessee’s separation distances are statewide: a disposal field sits at least 50 feet from a water supply and 25 feet from sinkholes, streams, gullies and cut banks, and the state may increase those distances where soils warrant (Rule 0400-48-01-.11). The water table must be at least four feet below the bottom of the disposal field unless soil conditions protect groundwater some other way (Rule 0400-48-01-.04(2)).

How Tennessee permitting works

Checked against Tennessee Secretary of State, Official Compilation of Rules and Regulations, Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0400-40-03 — General Water Quality Criteria, rule .06 Antidegradation Statement, carrying the Exceptional Tennessee Waters categories and the Outstanding National Resource Waters table (effective March 17, 2024) ↗ · retrieved Aug 30, 2026

Geology & soil

Slope is the governing constraint in Giles County, on 22.1% of the soils Tennessee's own NRCS septic interpretation rates, with a seasonal high water table next at 20.8%. That interpretation puts 50.8% of rated ground in the very limited class for a conventional disposal field. TDEC puts Tennessee's karst in the limestone country of the state's middle and east; 61.8% of this county's rated soils weathered in place from limestone or dolomite, and effluent reaching solution-widened rock gets little filtering.
