Nothing in Tallapoosa County changes this. Alabama’s separation distances are statewide and tabulated: Rule 420-3-1-.65(1) sets the minimum setbacks from wells, surface water, property lines, foundations and sinkholes for the disposal field, the tank and every other component, in Table 4 of the chapter. Karst is the limitation the rule text singles out — a site with caves, sinkholes or similar depressions within 300 feet of the disposal field that are likely to be affected is rated extreme, and no part of a system may sit within 50 feet of a sinkhole rim (r. 420-3-1-.38(5)).

Geology & soil

Slope is the governing constraint in Tallapoosa County, on 49.5% of the soils NRCS rates for a septic field, with bedrock close to the surface next at 23.2%. Piedmont ground weathered in place from crystalline rock: 62% of those rated soils formed in residuum, rock or a restrictive layer sits within five feet on 32%, and 25% lies on slopes over 15 percent. Very limited is a design constraint here, not a ban.
