Zoning & land use

Davidson County is one of the nine Tennessee counties TDEC lists as contract counties: they run their own septic system assistance instead of the state field office. Applications go to the Metro Public Health Department's septic and sewage disposal programme, not to a TDEC Environmental Field Office. Rule 0400-48-01 still sets the design standards statewide — what changes here is the office that reviews the site and issues the permit.

Environmental protections

Nothing in Davidson County changes this. Tennessee’s separation distances are statewide: a disposal field sits at least 50 feet from a water supply and 25 feet from sinkholes, streams, gullies and cut banks, and the state may increase those distances where soils warrant (Rule 0400-48-01-.11). The water table must be at least four feet below the bottom of the disposal field unless soil conditions protect groundwater some other way (Rule 0400-48-01-.04(2)).

Geology & soil

Subsoil that percolates too slowly is the governing constraint in Davidson County, on 30.3% of the soils Tennessee's own NRCS septic interpretation rates, with slope next at 19.0%. That interpretation puts 57.6% of rated ground in the very limited class for a conventional disposal field, and leaves 21% of the county unrated. TDEC puts Tennessee's karst in the limestone country of the state's middle and east; 55.3% of this county's rated soils weathered in place from limestone or dolomite, and effluent reaching solution-widened rock gets little filtering.
