Permit fees, forms & process

New installs and major repairs need a permit from the local health district, and the rules that bind are the local ones.

This county’s full guide is still in production — the authority contact shown here is the official source in the meantime.

Local rules

What’s different in Hardin County.

Four things decide what you can build and what it costs: zoning, environmental protections, power for aerobic systems, and the ground itself. We publish each one only where we have checked it — and say so plainly where the answer is “same as the rest of Ohio”.

Zoning & land use

The Kenton-Hardin Health Department works to a seasonal shutdown the state rules do not impose: by order of the board of health, installation of sewage systems is suspended from 1 December through 1 March. A sewage permit is valid one year from purchase or until the system is installed and approved; an address issued by the county engineer's office and a recorded property survey must be submitted before the permit issues, and a follow-up inspection falls within twelve months.

Environmental protections

Nothing in Hardin County changes this. Ohio requires an Ohio EPA NPDES permit for any system discharging off-lot to waters of the state, and adds requirements inside delineated source-water protection areas.

How Ohio permitting works

Geology & soil

The dominant constraint here is water perching on a restrictive layer (44.8% of rated soils), followed by a water table close to the surface (40.1%).
