Permit fees, forms & process

New installs and major repairs need a permit from the local health district, and the rules that bind are the local ones.

What’s different in Paulding County.

Four things decide what you can build and what it costs: zoning, environmental protections, power for aerobic systems, and the ground itself. We publish each one only where we have checked it — and say so plainly where the answer is “same as the rest of Ohio”.

Zoning & land use

Paulding County's zoning is township by township, and three townships have none. A township zoning certificate is required before development in Benton, Blue Creek, Carryall, Crane, Emerald, Harrison, Latty, Paulding and Washington townships; Auglaize, Brown and Jackson are recorded as not zoned. The county engineer also records that all land splits must be at least 1.5 acres unless the county commission approves a smaller one.

Environmental protections

Maumee River (Outstanding State Water (recreational), Indiana state line (RM 108.1) to the U.S. route 25 bridge (RM 15.05)). Ohio EPA's general permit for discharging household systems (OHK000004, Part II.C.2(e)) bars a new discharge to any of these, or to a tributary within one mile upstream. On those parcels the off-lot discharging route is closed and the system has to be a soil-absorption design, whatever the lot looks like.

Geology & soil

The dominant constraint here is water standing on the surface (66.7% of rated soils), followed by heavy clay subsoil that water moves through slowly (50.3%).
