Geauga County requires an evaluation of the residential sewage system at the time of transfer of ownership of any parcel served by one. The evaluation is conducted by a member of the health district, any corrective action it directs must be completed within the time set, and any system found to be functioning improperly must be brought up to current code. An off-lot system's evaluation includes effluent sampling, and an evaluation stays valid for at least twelve months.

Ohio EPA's general permit for discharging household systems (OHK000004, Part II.C.2(e)) bars a new discharge to any of these, or to a tributary within one mile upstream. On those parcels the off-lot discharging route is closed and the system has to be a soil-absorption design, whatever the lot looks like.

The dominant constraint here is water perching on a restrictive layer (71.5% of rated soils), followed by very firm subsoil (54.2%).
