Permit fees, forms & process

New installs and major repairs need a permit from the local health district, and the rules that bind are the local ones.

This county’s full guide is still in production — the authority contact shown here is the official source in the meantime.

Local rules

What’s different in Marion County.

Four things decide what you can build and what it costs: zoning, environmental protections, power for aerobic systems, and the ground itself. We publish each one only where we have checked it — and say so plainly where the answer is “same as the rest of Ohio”.

Zoning & land use

Marion County's subdivision regulations set the lot floor where services are absent. Table 4.0 requires a minimum width of 100 feet and a minimum lot area of 43,560 square feet — one acre — for a single-family dwelling where no public or community sanitary sewer and water supply is available, or whatever the zoning ordinance requires, whichever is greater.

Environmental protections

Nothing in Marion County changes this. Ohio requires an Ohio EPA NPDES permit for any system discharging off-lot to waters of the state, and adds requirements inside delineated source-water protection areas.

How Ohio permitting works

Checked against Ohio EPA Division of Surface Water, Antidegradation Tiers (Outstanding State Waters and Superior High Quality Waters designated under OAC 3745-1-05) ↗ · retrieved Aug 5, 2026

Geology & soil

The dominant constraint here is a water table close to the surface (43.3% of rated soils), followed by water standing on the surface (40.7%).
